In a renewed effort to provide the most positive environment for Saint Mary Academy Sports and to heed the direction of CSAA officials, SMA is focusing more energy to ensure proper sportsmanship is practiced by everyone at SMA, including families attending CSAA games and how they behave in regards to officials, fellow parents and coaches.
The CSAA handbook has been updated, including this language around Spectator/Parent behavior. The full handbook can be found here: CSAA Handbook updated 2019
Spectators and parents at any CSAA event are expected to act in the same respectful sportsmanlike manner that is demanded of the coaches and players. The use of profanity or abusive language directed at a player, coach or official before, during or after a contest will not be tolerated. Any parent or spectator who violates this rule may be ejected immediately from the venue. Violators are subject to suspension from future CSAA events for the remainder of the season, remainder of the year or longer.
Coaches are expected to police their own fans at “home” and at “away” venues. Gym/Field Managers are expected to act as necessary to stop any unacceptable behavior before, during or after a contest at their venue. Parish members who witness others from their parish acting in any way that is inappropriate are strongly encouraged to act on the spot to stop it and to let their AD know the situation as soon as practical. Unacceptable behavior at sporting events is a poor reflection on the individual, the parish and the Catholic community. Most importantly, it is a terrible example to set for our kids. Continued misbehavior by parish/school fans could cause the suspension of a team or parish from CSAA activities.
It is suggested that parents with complaints do not contact a coach for 24 hours after the conclusion of the event.
Everyone is encouraged to view the Archdiocese of Louisville produced Parenting Video. This video is available on the CSAA web site at www.loucsaa.org.
Additional Spectator rules during CSAA events:
In addition to the CSAA Handbook, the St. Mary Academy (SMA) Athletics website contains by-laws pertaining to good sportsmanship, and the “24 hour rule”. The Athletics site is updated throughout the year with any changes to the by-laws by the voting members of the Athletic Board. We encourage all parents to refer to the Athletic website and by-laws throughout the year to familiarize yourself with CSAA regulations, and the latest information from SMA Athletics. The “24 hour rule” referenced above can’t be stressed enough – this allows time for all parties involved to take another look at the events that unfolded, and to have a discussion outside of the gym or field.
The SMA Athletics site can be found here: http://csaastmaryacademy.website.sportssignup.com/ (By-Laws are listed under the Quick Links section).
In the event a parent has a complaint or concern about the performance of a coach, the parent should try to resolve the problem calmly, with the coach. A parent should never express dissatisfaction immediately following a game or publicly at practices or games. Any discussions concerning issues pertaining to the game should be discussed after a 24 hour cooling off period and should not occur in front of or in view of the children on the team. If a solution cannot be agreed upon, a parent should communicate, in writing, to the respective Sports Coordinator, and the Athletic Director and Vice-AD.
St. Mary Academy and the St. Mary Academy Athletics Board strive to maintain the highest standard of conduct and behavior by our students, parents, coaches and staff. As our by-laws state, our purpose is to provide every child who attends SMA or St. Bernadette an opportunity to participate in team or individual sports in a recreational environment that foster healthy competition, good sportsmanship, and Christian attitudes. Please keep in mind that all of our coaches, coordinators, volunteer workers, and Athletic Board members are unpaid volunteers looking to better our students and school. We are always looking for ways to improve and new faces to join our team. If you are interested in joining us and bringing new ideas to the table, please contact us at: SMAAthleticBoard@gmail.com.
Let’s continue to show everyone why St. Mary Academy is such a great place for our students to be and GO MONARCHS!
